Grant County

Highway

The Grant County Highway Department is responsible for the construction, repair and maintenance of the county highway system, including road surfaces, pavement marking, signs, snow removal, mowing ditches, bridges and culverts, and drainage on approximately 177.25 miles of asphalt surfaced roads and 280.25 miles of gravel roads.

Grant County has approximately 168 bridges to maintain. Grant County employs its own bridge crew to do as much of the bridge work in-house as possible. Our bridge count puts us in the top two counties in South Dakota for the number of structures. The department is also responsible for assisting townships with culverts. Grant County will, where possible, replace a wooden structure with culverts if a hydraulic study by a professional engineer determines its feasibility. Culverts can save as much as 60% of the cost of constructing a concrete bridge.
